Harare Mayor Jacob Mafume says there is a need for the city to consider setting up a chaplain’s office to deal with issues of counselling and guidance.
Ward 17 Councillor Happymore Gotora, who is also a pastor, is earmarked for the chaplain’s role.
Speaking at last week’s full council, Councillor Mafume said the chaplain’s office will also deal with spiritual concerns and conducting church services at funerals.
“I’ve spoken to Pastor Gotora.
“I’ve been thinking that we need to set up some chaplains for the council and also have a standard prayer and standard sermons that can be designed and also to deal with issues of various complaints that we have and also issues of counselling and guidance.
“I’ve noticed that at funerals of council workers and councillors, there isn’t an office that is dedicated to that kind of work.
“So, HR (human resources) if we could look at setting that up within our structures.
“We think that we can set up that office so we can deal with many things that have to do with spiritual concerns, funerals, council meetings and other processes of standard prayer,” he said.
Cllr Mafume said the chaplain’s office is also expected to deal with issues to do with the national anthem.
“When we do our meetings and so forth so that we are able to identify with what binds us as a nation.
“HR with the assistance of Pastor Gotora and probably others can also look into that.
“Let’s find a place for our national anthem and a place for prayer and make sure our flags are not out of kilter as is currently the case,” he told the meeting.
