The Zimbabwe National Organisation of Associations and Residents Trust (ZNOART) and the Palestine Embassy in Harare on Wednesday joined hands in calling for the removal of illegal sanctions against Zimbabwe.
Residents condemned the illegal sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe by western governments.
Every October 25, Zimbabwe marks the SADC Anti-Sanctions Day, a product of President Mnangagwa’s engagement and re-engagement policy.
ZNOART national chairperson Mr Shalvar Chikomba called for lifting of the illegal sanctions as residents deserve unlimited access to development and service delivery from local authorities and national service providers. He said the sanctions are hindering residents from accessing development and services.
“ZNOART joins the nation in commemorating 25 October and reiterates the wish by SADC that the international community factors the Report of the Special Rapporteur on the negative impact of unilateral coercive measures on the enjoyment of human rights, which proposes the lifting of these sanctions within the ambit of key principles of international law,” said Mr Chikomba.
Palestine Ambassador to Zimbabwe Tamer Almassri equated the illegal sanctions to the genocide the Palestine people are suffering at the hands of Israeli.
“We feel the pain of the Zimbabwean people as they are enduring illegal sanctions which amount to collective punishment against the ordinary citizens of Zimbabwe. The same suffering that the people of Zimbabwe are suffering because of the illegal sanctions is the same way the Palestinian people are suffering at the hands of the Israeli genocide. We call on the international community to intervene,” said Ambassador Almassri
Palestine welcomed the support and solidarity messages from all Zimbabwe’s provinces displayed by the Government and people of Zimbabwe towards the Palestinian people.
Ambassador Almassri implored the world to stand with Palestine and condemn the hypocrisy and double standards of the powerful states which are blind to the war crimes committed by apartheid Israel.
He called on the international community to be bold and courageous and assume its responsibilities in stopping Israel’s devastating war on the Gaza Strip, restraining the hand of occupation from the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and exerting the necessary pressure to ensure that all basic humanitarian needs reach Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip.
